So you think you know jazz? Well, jazz is always a surprise! Our newly renamed micro-fest (formerly known as Jazz On A Summer’s Day) is now in its third year. The word has been spreading and the emphasis remains firmly on accessible and enjoyable live music. Those of you who have been before already know this. Spread the word and open the ears of our local community to a great introduction to jazz through this thoroughly enjoyable live event. Hosted at Riverside Organic Farm, Whatcroft, we will be bringing exciting new features this year! Watch this space!. We promise a feast for the senses with live music and an even wider range of food and drink choices on site, featuring local produce. Our unique rustic stage creates a dynamic platform for both known and rising musicians, enhancing the festival’s energy and celebrating both young and more experienced talent.
The event opens at 2pm til 9pm (Bar open from 2.00pm) We are under cover, should the good old British weather let us down! Or shade, in the event of a heat wave!
Food and drink available to purchase thanks to Riverside Organic. Possibility of pre-ordering too!
First on stage will be Alex Clarke, a finalist in the BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year 2020, winner of the Rising Star category in the 2019 British Jazz Awards and three-time Parliamentary Jazz Awards nominee. She is recognised as one of the most in-demand saxophonists on the British jazz scene. She will be joined at Davenham Jazz Fest by the wonderful Andrzej Baranek, Ed Harrison & Dave Walsh, for a set of fiery, straight-ahead bop.
Act 2: The Emma Coates Quartet - 4.20pm
This quartet are our young, up and coming artists this year. The Emma Coates Quartet is a straight ahead jazz group made up of graduates of Leeds Conservatoire, with Emma Coates on saxophone and vocals, Harry Souter on bass and Louis Berthoud on drums and Joseph Frost -Tesfaye. Seamlessly blending favourite standards with original compositions, the group has an openness when playing together inspired by hard bop and the great trios of that era - Sonny Rollins and Joe Henderson, to name but a few.
There is great chemistry between the four musicians, blending to make a lovely sound and a great Saturday afternoon festival vibe.
Butcher’s Brew is a modern jazz group that has played shows at Ronnie Scott’s and at Jazz@Davenham! Ray has worked with numerous artists, including Mica Paris. He is joined by drummer Miles Levin, Tim Amann, pianist, and bassist Mike Green, who has performed with Jamie Cullum. The band plays a brilliant mix of jazz, funk, blue note and latin instrumental music.
We are delighted to welcome back the familiar face of Ben Holder who is the most acclaimed and exciting jazz violinist in the UK. His classical studies began at the age of six and were complemented by training at the Birmingham Conservatoire. Ben possesses an innate sense of swing rhythm, breathtaking technical ability and true showmanship on stage. This high energy final act guarantees an exciting and lively end to the evening and an opportunity to dance the night away!
